Romanus IV, Diogenes (1068-1071), with Eudocia, Michael VII, Constantius and Andronicus, Histamenon, Constantinople, ⧾PⲰMAN EVΔOKI [A], Christ standing facing crowning Romanus IV and Eudocia rev., [the convex side] KⲰN MIX ANΔ, Constantius, Michael and Andronicus standing facing, below dotted exergual groundline, 4.31g, 6h (Sear 1861; DO 2; Lygo, the Emperors of Byzantium, p. 229, this coin). Very fine.

Traditionally the obverse is the convex side and portrays Christ. In this coinage Christ appears on the concave side, and the three sons of the previous ruler, now Romanus IV's stepsons, are depicted on the convex side. It's notable that Romanus IV was captured in battle, deposed in his absence, and very quickly replaced by his stepson Michael, already depicted here in the centre of the convex side of his unfortunate predecessor's coin.
