Caracalla (AD 198-217), silver Denarius, Rome, AD 210-213, ANTONINVS PIVS AVG BRIT, rev. VICTORIAE BRIT, Victory advancing left, hold wreath and palm, 3.29g, 6h (RIC 231). Good very fine, scarce.

Augustus Britannicus is a title reflecting Caracalla's presence in Britain during his father's campaigns here, while the reverse type celebrates Roman victory over Britain.

In AD 208, Septimius Severus arrived with his sons Caracalla and Geta, and an army of perhaps 40,000 soldiers intent on quelling rebellion in Caledonia. His victory was short-lived though and soon after his death in York, in AD 211, his sons sought a political solution to the fighting and returned to Rome. The empire's frontier was ultimately withdrawn to Hadrian's Wall and Romans would never again embark on a significant campaign into Scotland.
