Richard III Groat London mint, type I, chevron barred A on TAS

Richard III (1483-85), silver Groat, type I, London Mint facing crowned bust in double tressure of nine arcs, fleur de lis on cusps, beaded circles and Latin legend surrounding, initial mark sun and rose 1 both sides, RICARDx DIx GRAx REXxx AGLx Z FRAnC, rev. long cross pattee, tri-pellets in each inner angle, beaded circles and twin concentric legend surrounding, outer legend with unbarred A, inner legend with chevron barred A, CIVI TAS LOn DOn, outer legend surrounding, POSVI DEVmx A DIVTOR E' mEVm, weight 2.82g (Stewartby p.434 - I rare; N.1679; S.2154). Well struck evenly toned with a good portrait, almost extremely fine / good very fine and rare variety, with good provenance.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse, "Richard, by the grace of God, King of England and France." and on the reverse inner legend "City of London" and the outer as "I have made God my helper" a Psalm from the Bible.

Ex James H Daniels (1864-1936), coin dealer Brighton, Sussex, purchased 1917 for 12/6d.

Ex B A Seaby, London, 1948 for £3.

Ex A H Baldwin & Son Ltd, circa 1960 for £15 and again later at undetermined date for £1,000.

Ex H R Jessop Collection, dealer in silver, died 1984, obituary BNJ 1984 page 301 - member of British Numismatic Society from June 1962.

Ex Motcomb Collection, Morton and Eden Auction 78, 17th March 2016, lot 147.
