Richard II Quarter-Noble, type IVa with escallop over shield, final issue of reign
Richard II (1377-99), gold Quarter-Noble, London Mint, series IVa, quartered shield, escallop above, double linear tressure of eight arcs surrounding, trefoils on cusps, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, initial mark cross pattée, + RICARD'x DEIxx GRAxx REXxx AnGL'x, rev. pellet at centre of ornate cross with lis terminals, lions in angles, double linear tressure of eight arcs surrounding, trefoils on cusps, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, + EXALTABITVRxx Inxx GLORIA, weight 1.61g (SCH 185 same dies; N.1319; S.1677). A little uneven in shape for some past shaving and clipping, otherwise very fine and an extremely rare final issue of Quarter Noble for this reign.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Richard by the Grace of God, King of England " and on the reverse "He shall be exalted in glory" a Psalm from the bible.
The final series of gold coins for this reign, type IV are so classified as elements of this coinage continue into the designs for the subsequent reign of King Henry IV, the escallop appears on the rudder of the ship on the larger gold denominations and above the shield on the lowly quarter noble.
