Richard II Quarter-Noble, mule of type 1a with 3b, London, very rare

Richard II (1377-99), gold Quarter-Noble, London Mint, mule of type 1b obverse with 3a reverse, quartered shield, double linear tressure of eight arcs surrounding, trefoils on cusps, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, initial mark cross pattée, + RICARD'x DEIxx GRAxx REXxx AnGx, rev. pellet at centre of ornate cross with lis terminals, lions over trefoils in angles, double linear tressure of eight arcs surrounding, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, + EXALTABITVRxx Inxx GLORIA, weight 1.48g (Schneider 139/166; Webb-Ware type 1b/3a; N.1318/1319; S.1673/1675). Toned, struck from a rusted pair of dies, hairline crack at inner circle at left portion of obverse and corresponding part of reverse, perhaps slightly clipped at King's name, otherwise good fine to almost very fine and a very rare muling of types for the Quarter Noble.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Richard by the Grace of God, King of England," and on the reverse "He shall be exalted in glory," a Psalm from the Bible.

The rusted die nature of the striking of this piece suggests it was struck late in the reign though no date indications have been able to be ascertained for the four types and ten sub-types. The total gold output at London for the reign of Richard II approximates to some £267,000.
