Richard II Quarter-Noble, London, ex Clarendon

Richard II (1377-99), gold Quarter-Noble, London Mint, series IVa, quartered shield, escallop above, double linear tressure of eight arcs surrounding, trefoils on cusps, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, initial mark cross pattee, + RICARD'x DEIxx GRAxx REXxx AnGL'x rev. pellet at centre of ornate cross with lis terminals, lions in angles, double linear tressure of eight arcs surrounding, trefoils on cusps, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, + EXALTABITVRxx Inxx GLORIA, weight 1.91g (SCH 185 same dies; N.1319; S.1677). A little double struck on reverse, toned a bold very fine and extremely rare.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Richard by the Grace of God, King of England " and on the reverse "He shall be exalted in glory" a Psalm from the bible.
