Restoration of Alnwick Castle, 1766.

Hugh Percy, First Duke of Northumberland (1714-1786), Restoration of Alnwick Castle, 1766, silver medal by John Kirk, draped bust right, HU. PERCY EARL OF NOR. 1764, rev. view of the castle, ALNWICK CASTLE RESTORED, in exergue, MDCCLXVI, 43mm (BHM 107 RRR [Eimer - not listed, cf 717]). Extremely fine with deep, old-collection tone, very rare variety.

This enigmatic medal must be mule, the obverse relating to an unrecorded event for which a medal was commissioned but not struck. Brown suggests the obverse may have been designed for a medal to commemorate the grand illuminations which the Earl and Countess held to celebrate George III's birthday, one day late on 5 June 1764. Though the reverse of the medal is dated 1766 the larger part of the work to restore the castle was carried out by Robert Adam c.1770-80.
