Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II second reign 145-116 BC, silver tetradrachm Salamis mint, dated RY 37
Ptolemaic kingdom, Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II (Physcon), second reign (145-116 BC), silver tetradrachm Salamis mint, dated RY 37 (134/3 BC), diademed head of Ptolemy I to right, wearing aegis, rev. ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟY ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ, eagle standing to left on thunderbolt; transverse sceptre in background, L ΛZ (date) to left, ΣA to right, 14.21g, (Svoronos 1550). Very rare date, extremely fine with a lovely tone.
Ptolemy VIII Euergetes II rule was marked by political conflict, civil war and violence within the royal family. He initially ruled jointly with his brother Ptolemy VI and sister Cleopatra II, but tensions between them eventually led to civil war. Ptolemy VIII gained control of Egypt in 145 BC after the death of Ptolemy VI and later married Cleopatra II, despite also being involved with her daughter, Cleopatra III. His reign was controversial because of his harsh treatment of political opponents and the violence that followed his return to power after being expelled from Alexandria. However, he also supported the economy and made important religious and building contributions, including the famous Temple of Horus at Edfu. He died in 116 BC, leaving the kingdom to Cleopatra III and his son Ptolemy IX.
The reverse legend ΠΤΟΛΕΜΑΙΟY ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ translates to "Of King Ptolemy".
