Ptolemy I Soter became satrap of Egypt in 323 BC after the death of Alexander the Great. As one of Alexander's most trusted generals, Ptolemy was appointed to govern Egypt during the struggles between Alexander's successors, known as the Diadochi. Although he officially ruled on behalf of the Macedonian empire, Ptolemy quickly began to establish his own power. As satrap, Ptolemy strengthened Egypt's defences and secured its wealth and resources. Egypt was an extremely valuable territory because of its fertile farmland and large grain supplies. Ptolemy also expanded his influence by gaining control of Cyprus and territories in the eastern Mediterranean. These actions helped protect Egypt and increased his economic and military strength. Ptolemy also sought legitimacy by associating himself with Alexander the Great. In 322 BC, he took control of Alexander's body and brought it to Egypt, demonstrating his claim to be a legitimate successor to Alexander's legacy. By gradually becoming more independent, Ptolemy laid the foundations for his own dynasty. In 305 BC, he officially declared himself king of Egypt. His time as satrap was therefore crucial in allowing him to consolidate his authority and establish Egypt as a powerful Hellenistic state.
