Probus, Æ Antoninianus, Providentia, Ticinum, 276-82 AD
Probus (AD 276-282), Æ Antoninianus, Ticinum, rev. PROVIDENTIA AVG, 3.78g, 6h (RIC V.ii, 550 ff). Extremely fine.
The Æ Antoninianus of Emperor Probus featuring Providentia on the reverse is a fascinating piece of Roman imperial propaganda and economic turmoil during the Crisis of the Third Century. The obverse showcases a detailed, radiate bust of the emperor in military Armour, emphasizing his role as a vigorous soldier emperor who secured the empire's borders. Meanwhile, the reverse depicts Providentia the personification of divine foresight standing to hold symbols such as a globe and a sceptre or standard. This imagery was carefully chosen to reassure anxious citizens and the military of Probus's wise governance, strategic planning, and prudent stewardship, projecting an image of stability and a secure future for Rome despite the turbulent political climate of his reign.
The obverse legend IMP C PROBVS AVG translates to "Emperor Caesar Probus Augustus."
The reverse legend PROVIDENT AVG translates to "The Foresight of the Emperor."
