Philip I (244-249 AD), silver Antoninianus, Rome 244-247 AD, IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG, radiate, draped and cuirassed bust right, rev. ADVENTVS AVGG, emperor on horseback left, raising hand and holding spear. 4.23g, 2h, (RIC IV-26b; RSC-3). Extremely fine.

Philip the Arab was Roman emperor from 244 to 249 AD, ruling during a period of considerable political and military pressure. He came to power after the death of the emperor Gordian III while campaigning in the East against the Sasanian Persian Empire. Philip's reign is particularly remembered for the celebration of Rome's 1,000th anniversary, known as the Ludi Saeculares, in 248 AD. His coinage played an important role in promoting his authority and communicating imperial messages across the Roman Empire. One notable coin from Philip's reign is the horseback Antoninianus, which depicts the emperor riding a horse on the reverse. The legend ADVENTVS AVGG, meaning "The arrival of the emperors," connects directly with this imagery. The mounted emperor represents his arrival, movement, and presence throughout the empire, while also presenting him as a powerful military leader. The image of the emperor on horseback was especially appropriate for Philip, whose authority was closely connected to the army and his campaigns. The coin therefore combines portraiture, inscription, and imagery to communicate an important political message. Philip is presented not simply as a ruler, but as an active and victorious emperor whose presence could bring stability to the Roman world. The horseback design and ADVENTVS AVGG legend together reinforce the idea of imperial arrival and military authority.

The obverse legend IMP M IVL PHILIPPVS AVG translates to "Emperor Marcus Julius Philippus Augustus."

The reverse legend ADVENTVS AVGG translates to "The arrival of the Augusti."
