Oliver Cromwell 1658 Shilling, ex Clarke

Oliver Cromwell (d.1658), silver Shilling, 1658, laureate and draped bust left, raised die flaw at top of forehead, legend and toothed border surrounding, OLIVAR. D.G.R.P. ANG. SCO. HIB &c PRO, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms of the Protectorate, date above, PAX QVÆRITVR BELLO, weight 6.01g (Bull 254; ESC 1005; S.3228). Toned, extremely fine.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as "Oliver by the Grace of God, Protector of the Republic of England, Scotland and Ireland," and on the reverse "Peace is sought by war."
