Muwahhid, Square Dirham, Qurtuba

Islamic Spain, Muwahhid, anonymous square silver Dirham, Qurtuba (Cordoba), no date (AH 558-631 / 1163-1236 AD), 1.48g (Album 497; Hazard 1117). Good very fine, rare.

Struck at Cordoba, the old Umayyad capital. Album notes that for over 400 years the Islamic convention of dating coins was almost completely absent in Spain. While the overall date range for this anonymous series ends in AD 1269, that includes coins minted in North Africa. Cordoba was gained by Ferdinand III of Castile in AD 1236.
