Muwahhid, Silver Dirham, Mursiya
Islamic Spain, Muwahhid, anonymous square silver Dirham, Mursiya (Murcia), no date (AH 558-662 / 1163-1264 AD), 1.55g (Album 497; Hazard 1115). Pleasantly toned, extremely fine, rare.
Album notes that for over 400 years the Islamic convention of dating coins was almost completely absent in Spain. While the overall date range for this anonymous series ends in AD 1269, that includes coins minted in North Africa. Murcia fell to Castile in AD 1243 but maintained a level of autonomy, as a vassal state with Muslim governors, until AD 1264 when it was permanently assimilated into Castile.
