Mary gold Angel mm halved rose and castle / mm pomegranate reverse mule VF30
Mary (1553-4), gold Angel, mule of classes III and II and mint marks halved rose castle and pomegranate, St Michael spearing dragon right, linear circle and Latin legend surrounding with Roman lettering and pellet stops on obverse, mint mark halved rose and castle after Queen's name, MARIA. .D. G.. ANG. FRA. Z. HIB. REGI., rev. quartered shield of arms on flat decked ship sailing right with bowsprit, M and rose above shield, Gothic lettered legend with annulet stops surrounding, mint mark before Z, Ao DnO'o FACTV'o ESToo ISTVD z EST'o mIRABIoo, weight 4.97g (Schneider 725; N.1958; S.2490B/2490A). Toned a little unevenly, one light crease with central short flan crack, otherwise a decent example of this extremely rare mule of lettering styles, punctuation and mint marks, the first we have ever had for sale, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as VF30, extremely rare.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Mary, by the grace of God, Queen of England, France and Ireland" and on the reverse "This is the Lord's doing and it is marvellous in our eyes."
