Marcus Aurelius, as Caesar, 139-161, silver Denarius, Rome, 153-154, AVRELIVS CAESAR AVG PII F, bare head of Marcus Aurelius right, rev. TR POT VIII COS II, the Genius Exercitus standing front, head left, holding patera over lighted altar in right hand and aquila in left, 3.53g, 6h (RIC III [Pius] 461). Sharp, about extremely fine.

The allegiance of any Roman army to its emperor had a lot to do with the funding it received from the emperor - the donativum - which was commonplace from the reign of Tiberius onwards. Types such as FIDES EXERCITVS and the present reverse type representing the spirit of the army [GENIVS EXERCITVS] served as useful reminders of this reciprocal arrangement.
