John (1199-1216), silver Penny Winchester
John (1199-1216), silver short cross Penny, class 5b2, in the name of his Father, Winchester Mint, moneyer Miles, facing crowned head with linear collar, hand holding sceptre at left, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, commences upper left with round top Rs, hENRICVS. R EX, rev. short voided cross pommee, small cross pommee in each angle, +MILES. ON. WINCE, weight 1.38g (cf Mass 1631; Winchester 8:2728e, this coin, dies H/l; N 970; S 1351). Struck with some weakness in parts of legend, otherwise toned, very fine.
This reverse die is shared between sub-class bii as reverse l and in sub-class c as reverse b. In the Winchester publication there are five pieces recorded with this die combination. This example is the one illustrated on plate 106.
