James II 1688 Halfcrown

James II (1685-88), silver Halfcrown, 1688, second laureate and draped bust left, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, IACOBVS. II. DEI. GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, garter star at centre, date either side of top crown, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB REX. edge inscribed in raised letters, +.DECVS. ET. TVTAMEN. . ANNO. REGNI. QVARTO+ weight 15.03g (Bull 759; ESC 502; S.3409). Toned, a little weakly struck in high points of hair, otherwise almost extremely fine, and hard to find this well preserved.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James the Second, by the grace of God," and on the reverse, "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," additionally on the edge "An ornament and a safeguard, in the fourth year of the reign."
