James II 1686 Guinea, second bust, scarce date
James II (1685-88), gold Guinea, 1686, second laureate head left, legend surrounding, IACOBVS.II. DEI.GRATIA, rev. crowned cruciform shields, sceptres in angles, date either side of top crown, MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB REX., weight 8.18g (Schneider -; M.C.E. 126; S.3402). Pale yellow tone, a bold very fine and we note no example of this date in the famous Schneider Collection.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James the second by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
