The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James the second by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."

The 1686 calendar year has the highest gold output of this reign with £617,411 worth of gold struck into coin. However, this date of gold coin today is not seen as often as the 1687 dated gold coins suggesting the survival rates differ compared to output.
