James II 1685 silver Threepence, AU55, plate coin for reverse
James II (1685-88), silver Threepence, 1685, laureate head left, toothed outer border, latin legend reads IACOBVS. II. DEI. GRATIA., rev, crowned mark of value, date in legend, reads MAG. BR. FRA. ET. HIB. REX, weight 1.50g (Bull. 792; ESC.1980; Robinson p150: 79, p.xvi 59 and plate this coin; S.3415). Toned some flecking, annealing flaws in hair or struck from a rusty obverse die, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as AU55, scarce.
NGC certification 6946209-009.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James the Second, by the Grace of God," and abbreviated on the reverse as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland."
The 1685 Threepence and penny are the only small silver coins of this date with no maundy set available.
