James I silver Halfgroat mm thistle, first coinage with bust
James I (1603-25), silver Half-Groat, first coinage (1603-04), first crowned and armoured bust right, value II behind, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark thistle (1603-04), .I; D; G; ROSA: SINE: SPINA:, rev. large quartered shield of arms, mint mark thistle above, toothed outer border, weight 0.96g (N.2076; S.2649). Toned, double struck a little off centre and weak in parts, otherwise very fine.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James, by the Grace of God, a rose without a thorn."
