James I Shilling, first coinage, second bust, mm thistle
James I (1603-25), silver Shilling, first coinage (1603-04), second crowned bust right, value behind, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, initial mark thistle (1603-04) both sides, IACOBVS D; G; ANG; SCO; FRA; ET. HIB; REX., rev. quartered shield of arms, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, .EXVRGAT. DEVS. DISSIPENTVR . INIMICI., weight 5.64g (N.2073; S.2646). Toned unevenly, a little double struck in one part of legend, excellent detail on bust, with some hairlines on bust and with a scuff in the reverse legend, otherwise good very fine.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse, "James, by the grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland," and on the reverse "Let God arise and let his enemies be scattered" a Psalm from the Bible.
