James I (1603-25), silver Penny, first coinage (1603-04), second crowned and armoured bust right, value I behind, beaded circles and legend surrounding, initial mark thistle (1603-04), .I; D; G; ROSA: SINE: SPINA:, rev. large quartered shield of arms, mint mark thistle above, toothed outer border, weight 0.52g (N.2077; S.2650A). Toned with some porosity from being once in the soil, otherwise very fine.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James, by the Grace of God, a rose without a thorn."
