James I Laurel, mm thistle, 3rd bust, Majesty Grading Company slab VF25
James I (1603-25),gold Laurel of Twenty Shillings, third coinage (1619-25), third laureate and draped bust left, S style ties at rear of bust, value behind, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding on both sides, initial mark thistle (1621-23), IACOBVS D: G: MAG. BRI. FRAN: ET HIB REX.,rev.long cross fourchée over crowned quartered shield of arms, terminal mark thistle, FACIAM EOS IN GENTEM VNAM (Schneider -; N.2113; S.2638A).Toned and double struck with associated surface marks, has been assessed and graded by Majesty Grading Company as VF25, no example of mint mark in the Schneider Collection.
"MGC" certification 11930 - this is the first coin we have handled from this new grading service based in the UK.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "James by the Grace of God, King of Great Britain, France and Ireland" and on the reverse as "I will make them one nation," taken from the Bible.
The original pyx trial records show that £332,369 of 22 carat crown gold was struck for this mint mark from 5th February 1621 until 4th July 1623.
