James I gold Halfcrown third bust, mm tower, ex Baumhauer
James I (1603-25), gold Halfcrown, second coinage, third crowned bust right, beaded circle and legend surrounding, initial mark tower (1612-13), .I'. D'. G'. ROSA'. SINE'. SPINA., rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, I to left of crown, R to right, beaded circle and legend surrounding, .TVEATVR. VNITA. DEVS., weight 1.10g (Schneider 73; N.2094; S.2630). Weak in parts, flan slightly undulating and a little ragged, some light surface marks, very fine.
The Latin legends translate as "James by the grace of God, a rose without a thorn" on the obverse, and on the reverse as "May God guard these united" in reference to the Kingdoms of England and Scotland.
The crown gold of 22 carat output for this mint mark of tower from 23rd May 1612 to 18th April 1613 totals £299,151.
