Jaipur, Year One Mohur in the name of Bahadur Shah II

India, Indian States, Jaipur, gold Mohur in the name of the last Mughal Emperor Bahadur Shah II (AH 1253-1273 / 1837-58 AD), Jaipur, year 1, 10.84g (KM 102). Good very fine.

As power was gradually eroded from the Mughal Empire the nature of India's political landscape changed with relatively small Princely States like Jaipur and, at the other end of the scale, the might of the Marathas and the East India Company all paying notional respect to the last Mughal Emperors while in fact Bahadur Shah II himself was confined to the walled city of Dehli, effectively powerless. When he was, perhaps through flattery, convinced of supporting the Rebellion of 1857 the East India Company seized their opportunity, put him on trial, found him guilty and exiled him to Burma. The present coin represents that shifting political landscape. Jaipur cites him here, as they had done the preceding Mughal Emperors, but would later cite the Empress Victoria and her successors in exactly the same way.
