Ireland, John as King, silver Farthing, Limerick, Willem

Ireland, John as King (1199-1216), silver Farthing, Limerick Mint, moneyer Willem, facing crowned head in triangle with star inside each apex, legend surrounding, IOh AN REX, rev. star in triangle, legend surrounding, WIL LEM ON L, weight 0.38g (DF 52; Withers -; S.6234A). Toned very fine for issue and extremely rare being the first Willem Limerick piece we have seen.

Withers publication "Irish Small Silver" records all the coins that were known as of 2004, including some Limerick Mint Halfpennies coined by Willem and this Farthing carries the same legend as the Halfpenny 1/b. However as of 2004 only the Farthing coined by Wace was known, therefore this may be the only known example of a Willem Farthing at Limerick, of the highest rarity.
