Ionia, Uncertain, Electrum Hemihekte

Ionia, Uncertain Mint (c. 650-600 B.C.), Electrum Hemihekte (1/12 Stater). Striated surface, rev. incuse punch, 1.12g (Wiedauer 9; SNG Kayhan 681). A good example of this important issue dating from the dawn of coinage, good very fine and rare.

One of the first true coins to bear an obverse design. Whereas the earliest examples of electrum coinage were of globular shape and without types, this issue illustrates the beginnings of coin design, with its simple striated lines and an incuse punch.
