From a mintage of approximately 300 pieces commissioned by the society in 1849 and struck in 1852.
Members of the union paid a subscription which was used for promoting the arts. The commemorative medal series was commissioned to promote medallic art while silver medals were given as prizes to contemporary artists who impressed the union's membership.
