Henry VIII gold Halfcrown, posthumous issue, mm. arrow, H.D.G legend
Henry VIII (1509-47), Posthumous issue under King Edward VI (1547-49), gold Halfcrown of the Double Rose, Tower Mint, issued at Thirty Pence in 20 carat gold, crowned double rose, h to left and R to right for Henry Rex, beaded circle and Latin Roman letter legend surrounding, initial mark downward arrow, legend transposed with usual reverse legend, Roman lettering with comma and lozenge stops, RVTILANS'. ROSA'. SINE'. SP, the last P over the cross on crown, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, H to left, R to right, initial mark downward arrow, pellet stops, H. D. G. RVTILANS'. ROSA'. SINE'. SP, weight 1.50g (Stewartby p.523 - (iv) as ER variety; cf.Schneider 655; North 1869; S.2399). Toned, a little oval in shape, otherwise about very fine and very rare with such unusual rendering of the legends, nothing like this in the Schneider collection.
The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "a dazzling rose without a thorn" in reference to Henry; and on the reverse "Henry by the Grace of God, a dazzling rose without a thorn" which is not the usual reading.
