Henry VIII gold Halfcrown, Posthumous issue, ex Ryan and Clarendon

Henry VIII (1509-47), Posthumous issue under King Edward VI (1547-49), gold Halfcrown of the Double Rose, Tower Mint, issued at Thirty Pence in 20 carat gold, crowned double rose, h to left and R to right for Henry Rex, beaded circle and Latin legend surrounding, initial mark downward arrow, legend transposed with usual reverse legend, Roman lettering with comma and lozenge stops, RVTILANS'. ROSA'. SINE'. SPI, rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, initial mark upward arrow, slipped trefoil stops, HENRIC' 8' D G' A' FR'Z' HI' REX' weight 1.42g (Schneider 655; North 1869; S.2399). Toned, a little blundered in striking, otherwise a bold very fine and rare.

The Latin legends translate as on the obverse "a dazzling rose without a thorn" in reference to Henry; and on the reverse "Henry 8th By the Grace of God, King of England and France".
