Henry VIII Angel, third coinage, mm lis, annulet on hull of ship

Henry VIII (1509-47),fine gold Angel of six shillings and eight pence, third coinage (1544-47), St Michael slaying dragon, halo breaks inner beaded circle, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding, initial mark lis (1544-45) both sides, with annulet to left of halo, hEnRIC'8x Dxx Gxx AGL'x FRA'xZx hIB'x REXxxo, rev.ship sailing right, annulet on hull, quartered shield of arms at centre, h and rose either side of cross above, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, PERx CRVCE'x TVA'x SALVAx nOSx XPE'x REDx' weight 4.97g (Schneider 622; N.1830; S.2300).Toned, flan a little undulating, otherwise very fine.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Henry VIII by the Grace of God, King of England and France"; and on the reverse "By Thy cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer".

The fine gold output of the third coinage with mint mark lis totalled £165,931 worth between 1st June 1544 and 31st March 1545.
