Henry VII Penny York, keys below, under Archbishop Rotherham
Henry VII (1485-1509), silver Penny, Sovereign type, York Mint, issued under Archbishop Rotherham, facing seated figure of King on throne with orb and sceptre, orb with extended cross, one pillar of throne visible, Latin legend and beaded border surrounding, ornate letters with rosette stops, hEnRIC* DI* GRA* REX* ANG, rev. long cross fourchée over quartered shield of arms, key either side of bottom, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding, CIVI TAS EBO RACI, weight 0.75g (S.C.B.I. 23:711; N.1728; S.2237). Toned, a little chipped and ragged, with bold design elements, very fine.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Henry, by the Grace of God, King of England" and on the reverse "City of York."
Thomas Rotherham born 24th August 1423 in Rotherham, Yorkshire and was educated at Kings College, Cambridge where he graduated with a Bachelor of Divinity. After becoming a priest he was Prebendary of Lincoln in 1462, then onto Salisbury in 1465. Later he became Bishop of Rochester in 1468, Bishop of Lincoln in 1472 and finally Archbishop of York in 1480 which he held until his death on 29th May 1500.
