Henry VII gold Angel, type III, initial mark Pansy, superb rendition of St Michael

Henry VII (1485-1509),fine gold Angel of six shillings and eight pence, type III, St Michael slaying dragon, large wings, beaded circle and Latin legend surrounding, initial mark pansy (1495-98) both sides, saltire stops and abbreviated Latin legend both sides hEnRIC'x DI'x GRA'x REXx AnGLIx Zx FRAn'x, rev.ship sailing right, quartered shield upon hull, cross above, h to left, rose to right, PERx CRVCE'x TVA'x SALVAx nOSx XPE'x REDE'x, weight 5.08g (Schneider 522; N.1696, S.2183).Lightly toned, with a superbly struck and detailed St Michael, a little weaker on dragon and reverse, extremely fine / very fine and a rare type and mint mark.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Henry by the Grace of God, King of England and France"; and on the reverse "By Thy cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer."

The accounts for this mint mark run from 30th September 1495 until 29th September 1498 tell us that 2,218 pounds of gold were struck into £49,937 worth of face value gold coin.
