Henry VII Angel, type V, MS62, im pheon (1505-9), ex New Forest Hoard

Henry VII (1485-1509), gold Angel of six shillings and eight pence, type V, St Michael slaying dragon, beaded circle and Latin legend surrounding, circle continues through head of Angel, initial mark pheon (1505-09) both sides, saltire stops and abbreviated Latin legend, hEnRIC'x DI'x GRA'x REXx AGLIE'x Zx FR' x, one saltire by nimbus, rev. ship sailing right, quartered shield upon hull, cross above, h to left, rose to right, double saltire stops, PERxx CRVCE'xx TVA'x SALVAxx nOSxx XPE'x RED'x, weight 5.08g (cf.Schneider 542-544; SCBI Ashmoleon cf.23:63 Henry VII; N.1698; S.2187). Toned with some light surface marks, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as MS62 with New Forest Hoard label, unusual to see beaded circle continuing across Angel's forehead.

NGC Certification 8465299-024.

The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "Henry by the Grace of God, King of England and France"; and on the reverse "By Thy cross, save us, O Christ, our Redeemer."

The gold with the pheon mint mark was issued over three to four years and was therefore the largest output of the reign with over £327,000 worth of coinage issued across all the gold denominations.

The Ashmoleon collection only has this variation of saltires with a coin that reads AnGL rather than as we have here.
