Henry III, voided long cross Penny, Continental imitation of class 3

Henry III (1216-72), silver voided long cross Penny, Continental imitation of class 3b (1248-50), with London Mint signature of Nicole, facing crowned head, Latin legend and beaded borders surrounding both sides, commences at top, *hEIIRICVS REX III, rev. long voided cross pommée, trio of pellets in each angle, HIO OLE OII LVHD (cf. N.987; cf. S.1363). Toned, creased weak in parts, of a continental style and metal mix perhaps.

The English medieval pennies were such a success in trade with the continent, as evidenced by vast hoards found overseas like the Brussels Hoard, that imitations were produced in many localities.

We conclude this piece is Continental as the legend lacks the use of a proper N punch both sides and the lettering seems different in style as well as other subtle differences in the design looking at the Kings lower facial area. The beard is made up of multiple pellets unlike the English versions, also the metal is a brighter colour than see with the English pennies as perhaps the metal content is different to English productions. An intriguing piece.
