Hadrian, Silver Denarius, Fides, Rome, AD 130-8
Hadrian (117-138 AD), silver Denarius, Rome, AD 130-138, HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P, bare head right, rev. FIDES PVBLICA, Fides standing right, holding corn-ears and bowl of fruit, 3.47g, 7h (RIC II.3, 2200). Good metal, nearly extremely fine.
Hadrian was Roman Emperor from 117 to 138 AD and was the third emperor of the Nerva Antonine dynasty. Unlike some of his predecessors, Hadrian focused less on expanding the Roman Empire and more on strengthening and securing its existing borders. He travelled extensively throughout the empire, visiting provinces such as Britain, Egypt, Greece and Asia Minor, and personally inspected the army and frontier defences. One of his most famous achievements was the construction of Hadrian's Wall in Britain, which marked the northern limit of Roman territory. Hadrian was also a great supporter of architecture and culture, rebuilding the Pantheon in Rome and commissioning many important buildings. His reign was generally peaceful, although there were major conflicts, including the Bar Kokhba Revolt in Judaea. Hadrian died in 138 AD and was succeeded by Antoninus Pius.
The obverse legend HADRIANVS AVG COS III P P translates to "Hadrian, Emperor, consul for the third time, father of the nation."
The reverse legend FIDES PVBLICA translates to "Public Faith."
