George VI 1950 Matt Proof Sixpence
George VI (1936-52), Matt Proof cupro-nickel Sixpence, 1950, special issue for photographic promotional purposes, bare head left, initials HP below neck for Humphrey Paget, legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS VI D:G: BR: OMN: REX F: D: IND: IMP: rev. crowned GviR, date either side, legend FID. DEF. above with SIXPENCE below, edge milled (Bull 4261; Davies 2221; ESC 1838C; S4110). Toned matt as struck and of the highest rarity.
The Matt Proof coins were produced for special promotional purposes, specifically aimed at producing the best photographs possible to show off the designs of the coins for all advertising material for the Half-Century Proof sets of 1950. With the more primitive nature of photography at that time, it was easier to make a matt coin than to try to perfect images of the brilliant proof coins with mirror-like fields. It is assumed only 3-5 sets of such coins would have been of which this Sixpence is a component part.
