George V (1910-36), gold Sovereign, 1928, Pretoria Mint, South Africa, bare head left, B.M. on truncation for engraver Bertram Mackennal, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS V D.G. BRITT: OMN: REX F.D. IND: IMP:, rev. St. George and dragon right, WWP under lance, Mint letters SA at centre of ground-line, date in exergue, B.P. to upper right of exergue for designer Benedetto Pistrucci (Bentley 925; Kaplan 105; Hill 292; Bull EGC 1923; S.4004). Lightly toned with just a dew light hairlines, graded by PCGS as MS65.

We note as of February 2026 that PCGS have graded a total of 542 examples of the 1928 SA Sovereign of which only ten are slightly finer than this piece. This coin shares the 65 grading step with 67 other pieces. For comparison NGC have graded 836 piece of which only seven are slightly finer and shares this step with 97 other pieces. This is a total of 1,378 pieces graded with only 17 finer.

Calendar Year Mintage 18,235,057.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "George the Fifth by the Grace of God, King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India."
