George IV 1826 Sovereign, with 6 of date struck over smaller. Ex Bentley lot 956

George IV (1820-30), gold Sovereign, 1826, variety with 6 struck over small 6, GEOR struck over small GEOR with other letters showing some elements of overstriking, second bare head left, date below neck, legend and toothed border surrounding, .GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA., rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, BRITANNIARUM REX FID: DEF: weight 7.98g (Bentley 956 this coin; Marsh 11B R6; S.3801). Toned, bagmarked and hairlined, good very fine, reverse practically extremely fine and the discovery coin of the variety, extremely rare.

Calendar year mintage 5,724,046.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George the Fourth by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."

This coin was the first discovered of this unusual variety where it would seem the engraver started to use the wrong set of letter and number punches when preparing the obverse dies and over-stamped the affected letters with correct size punches on the die, resulting in these unusual overstruck coins which are extremely rare.

Provenance:

Ex Bentley Collection, part 2, 8th May 2013, lot 956.

Ex Mark Rasmussen Numismatist, List 8, 2005, item 279 for £2,500.
