George IV 1826 Proof Half-Sovereign
George IV (1820-30), Proof gold Half-Sovereign, 1826, engraved by William Wyon after Chantrey, second bare head left, legend GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA date below, raised rim both sides, rev. inverted die axis, engraved by Johann B Merlen, crowned shield of arms, quartered with the arms of Hanover as an escutcheon, REX FID: DEF: BRITANNIARUM, edge milled (WR 249; S 3804). Pleasantly toned with some light hairlines in the fields, practically as struck, becoming rare.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "George IV by the Grace of God," and on the reverse as "King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith."
