George IV 1825 proof Half-Sovereign PR62 DEEP CAMEO

George IV (1820-30), gold Pattern Half-Sovereign, 1825, engraved by William Wyon after Chantrey, second bare head left, legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIUS IV DEI GRATIA, date below with rosette either side, raised rim both sides, rev. inverted die axis, engraved by Johann B Merlen, crowned quartered shield of arms, with a crowned escutcheon of the arms of Hanover, legend and toothed border surrounding, REX FID: DEF: BRITANNIARUM, edge plain (WR 248 R5; cf.S.3804). Pleasantly toned with some light hairlines in the fields, has been graded and slabbed by PCGS as PR62DCAM, extremely rare and a very pleasing example.

PCGS Certification 951026.62/36079735.

The Latin legends translates on obverse as "George IV by the Grace of God," and on the reverse as "King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."

These rare 1825 pattern prototype pieces were struck a year in advance of the more plentiful proof set coins more usually seen dated 1826. There are 1825 dated proof or pattern pieces of more or less all the denominations but all exist in small numbers. For an example of the silver Crown see the Neil Smith Collection sold via Sovereign Rarities in the New York Sale on the 15th January 2020.
