Lightly toned, good extremely fine and very rare.
The first year for the coinage of King George IV; the one year only type Half-Sovereign has a reported Calendar year mintage of 231,288.
The Latin legends translates on obverse as "George IV by the Grace of God, King of the Britains, Defender of the Faith," and on reverse as "in the year 1821."
Due to the very similar design of the Sixpence for the new coinage of 1821 it became quickly evident that the unscrupulous in society were gilding the Sixpence to pass as the gold Half-Sovereign. Therefore the mintage was halted at the relatively low figure of 231,288 pieces until a new reverse design could be produced which did not appear as currency until 1823.
