George III (1760-1820), oval countermark upon Spanish Eight Reales of King Charles III (1759-88), 1774 PJ, struck in Madrid, Spain, small oval hallmark of George III right at centre of obverse, bust of Spanish King laureate and draped right, date below, legend and toothed border surrounding, CAROLVS.III. DEI. G., rev. crowned quartered shield of arms, R to left for Reales over crowned mint mark M for Madrid, 8 to right over Mint Assayer initials PJ, legend and toothed border surrounding, .HISPANIARUM. REX., weight 26.80g (Bull 1850; ESC 135; S.3765A). Toned, coin very fine with small nick on rim, countermark good very fine, slabbed and graded by NGC XF Details, Obverse Test Cut, counterstamp AU Standard, a rare host coin.

The initials C and N at the end of the reverse legend represent the names of the Mint Assayers who were Pedro Cano and Juan Bautista Sanfaury (1765-82).
