George III (1760-1820), gold Half-Guinea, 1803, sixth laureate head right, legend continuous over head, GEORGIVS .III. DEI.GRATIA, rev. quartered shield of arms in crowned garter, garter motto HONI SOIT QUI MAL Y PENSE, date below, BRITANNIARUM REX FIDEI DEFENSOR (MCE 441; S.3736). Toned extremely fine.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George III by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse as "King of all the Britain's, Defender of the Faith." The older Norman-French legend on the reverse garter translates as "Evil to him, who evil thinks" and is the motto of the chivalric Order of the Garter founded in 1348 by King Edward III.
