George III (1760-1820), gold Guinea, 1798, with 8 of date struck over 7, fifth laureate head right, Latin legend surrounding, GEORGIVS .III. DEI.GRATIA, rev. spade shaped crowned quartered shield of arms, date below, legend reads in abbreviated Latin commencing lower left, M.B.F. ET. H. REX. F.D. B.ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T ET. E., edge milled, weight 8.39g (cf.Schneider 612; Bull EGC 731 R; MCE 402; Farey 1376 S.3729). An attractive example with pleasing surfaces, graded by NGC as MS62 and a rare overdate.

NGC Certification 2130744-041.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George III by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse in abbreviated Latin which if in shown in full reads "Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex Fidei Defensor Brun et Lunebergen-sis Dux, Sacri Romani Imperii Archi-Thesaurius et Elector" and translates as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneberg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire."

The most common spade type reverse guinea obviously has a good survival rate from what was a calendar year mintage of £2,967,505 of gold, which was the second highest of the spade type guineas, but actually only the seventh highest of this reign.

Provenance:

Ex Dr Rolf Baumhauer Collection, part 4, Sincona, Auction 82, 15th May 2023, lot 1822.
