George III (1760-1820), gold Third Guinea, 1797, first type, first laureate head right, Latin legend and toothed border surrounding, GEORGIVS III DEI GRATIA. rev. large crown, date in legend surrounding commencing at lower left, . MAG. BRI. FR. ET. HIB. REX. weight 2.79g (MCE 449; S.3738). Lightly toned, some hairlines, extremely fine, the first year for the denomination.
The abbreviated Latin legends translate as on the obverse "George the Third by the Grace of God", and on the reverse as "King of the Britons, Defender of the Faith."
