George II (1727-60),gold Half-Guinea, 1740, intermediate laureate head left, Latin legend surrounding with pellet stops, Latin legend, GEORGIUS.II. DEI.GRATIA., U for V in King's name, toothed outer border both sides,rev.die axis slightly off target, crowned quartered shield of arms, date either side of crown, abbreviated Latin legend, M.B.F. ET. H. REX. F.D. B.ET. L. D. S. R. I. A. T ET. E., weight 4.04g (Schneider 601; Bull EGC 644 R5; MCE 351; S.3683).Once cleaned now lightly toned, with wear to high points both sides, fine to good fine, has been slabbed and graded by NGC as VF details cleaned, an extremely rare date.

The Latin legends translate to on obverse "George II by the Grace of God" continuing on the reverse in abbreviated Latin which if in shown in full reads "Magnae Britanniae Franciae et Hiberniae Rex Fidei Defensor Brun et Lunebergen-sis Dux, Sacri Romani Imperii Archi-Thesaurius et Elector" and translates as "King of Great Britain, France and Ireland, Defender of the Faith, Duke of Brunswick and Luneberg, High Treasurer and Elector of the Holy Roman Empire."

The calendar year output of gold in the year 1740 totalled £196,245 which was comparatively low for a year in which two guinea pieces were also issued.
