France, Louis XIV 1693 D gold Louis d'Or Lyon Mint
France, Louis XIV (1643-1715), gold Louis d'Or "aux quatre L", 1693-D, Lyon Mint, older laureate bust right, by engraver Joseph Roettiers, date below, LVD. XIII. D.G. FR.ET.NAV.REX, rev. CHRS. REGN. VINC. IMP., four cruciform crowned double L's, fleur de lis in angles, mintmark D at centre, crescent at end of legend, weight 6.70g (Dup. 1440A; Gad. 252). First year of issue for the second reform, struck on a large flan with host coin barely visible, attractively toned with a good portrait, extremely fine.
The cost of Louis XIV wars across Europe triggered a number of monetary reforms. The first monetary reform occurred in 1689 with the first Louis d'Or denomination struck over the pre-existing gold Ecus d'Or, and with a value of 12 Livres Tournois. The second monetary reform occurred in September 1693 and stated the value of the Louis d'Or at 14 Livres Tournois. These show the crescent mark on the reverse.
